Proven Expertise In Criminal Defense

When selecting a criminal defense attorney, it is important to find someone with the experience and knowledge to handle your case in your jurisdiction. I am attorney Joseph W. Varela, and I have provided skilled defense to people charged with crimes in the Houston area since 1983.

My private practice focuses on felony criminal defense and appeals, and I offer assistance with the expunction process and other legal services. I have a proven record and the expertise and experience necessary to defend complex criminal cases.

I hold a law degree from the University of Texas and am licensed by the Supreme Court of Texas. I have been admitted to the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. I have served as a special prosecutor for Harris County and as an associate judge in the City of Houston Municipal Court.

In addition to my legal practice, I have written extensively on criminal defense topics for legal publications. I have taught at Houston Community College and served on the faculty of the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center, the Houston Bar Association Criminal Practice Seminar and the South Texas College of Law Defender Advocacy Workshop. I am a longstanding member of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association.

Why Is Board Certification Important?

I am certified in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, representing years of dedication to practice in criminal law at a high level. Board certification means that a lawyer has been recognized as having special competence in a particular area of law. When you or someone you know is charged with a serious crime, you should consider selecting a lawyer who has gone the extra mile to become board-certified.

To become board-certified as a criminal lawyer, you must show that you have considerable experience, including many criminal trials. You must get references from other lawyers who have seen you in action and know your capabilities, and you have to pass a tough daylong examination.
